From Exporecerca Jove to the Hospital de Sant Pau

13/12/2009 Three students of second level of ESO from the Salesian School "Mare de Déu dels Dolors" from Sant Boi visited on 9th December, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.

Sara Mendoza, Yaiza Ortuño and Aina Montserrat were awarded with the "Premio Hospital de Sant Pau" in the X Exporecerca Jove that took place last April at the CosmoCaixa Museum. His work, entitled " Efectes de l’activitat escolar sobre la pressió arterial dels estudiants” (Effects of school activity on the students’ blood pressure) aimed to analyze the possible changes that had blood pressure on different activities performed throughout a school day, and the relations between the relative effort and the variables studied (systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and heart rate).

The one-day activity was visiting the premises of the modernist Hospital de Sant Pau in the morning and the participation in the afternoon with the Catalan Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (ICCC) staff in activities and workshops in some of the departments of this research institute focused on cardiovascular disease, subject of the research of the awardees.

The result was very positive both for students and researchers (Dr. Martínez-González, Dr. Oriol-Juan, M.Àngels Velasco, Dra. Peña, Dr. Crespo and Olaya García). This added a point in motivating young people to bring them into the world of research.
